Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi)
The Science Based Targets Initiative is an international, private sector-driven organization that encourages companies to commit to science-based targets to ensure a strong collaborative effort.
What do I need to know?
The science-based targets are based on the latest climate science and provide a clearly defined pathway for companies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in line with the Paris Agreement, which calls for limiting temperature increases to below 2°C compared to pre-industrial levels and aiming for no more than 1.5°C. This will help prevent the worst impacts of climate change and future-proof economic growth.
The Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) is a private sector-driven organization that encourages companies to commit to science-based targets to ensure a strong shared commitment.
Companies that join the initiative complete the following five steps:
Commit: Submit a letter stating your intent to establish a science-based goal
Develop: Work to establish an emissions reduction target that meets SBTi's criteria
Submit: Submit your goal to the SBTi for official endorsement
Communicate: Announce your goal and inform your stakeholders
Disclose: Report annually on company-wide emissions and track target progress
Support for the initiative has increased significantly since 2020, from 337 supporting companies in the EU in 2020 to 1,808 in the first half of 2022.
